Mayflower Theatre has appointed PR agency Lee Peck Media to keep it in the public eye while it undergoes a multi-million pound makeover this summer.
The iconic theatre, the third biggest regional theatre in the UK by capacity and the largest in the south of England, is embarking on a multi-million pound refurbishment project as it celebrates its 90th year. Improvements include completely repainting the auditorium, installing 1,659 new seats and improving accessibility.
The work began this week and the theatre will reopen on September 26 with a Gala Performance prior to welcoming Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo on the Friday and Saturday of that week.
Michael Ockwell, CEO of Mayflower Theatre, said: “The work represents a significant investment and we will be dark for just over three months so it’s essential that we keep the theatre in the public’s consciousness during that period and inform them of precisely what’s going on.
“Lee Peck Media has proved over many years to be hugely influential and media savvy and we are looking forward to working with the team.”
He added: “Over and above our entertainment programme, Mayflower Theatre is a vitally important contributor to the region’s economy. We employ 230 people and every year we bring more than 500,000 visitors to the city who exercise huge spending. It’s therefore vitally important that when the refurbishment is complete we pick up where we left off and deliver a terrific programme which people want to enjoy in much improved surroundings.”
Lee Peck Media chairman, Lee Peck, said: “Mayflower Theatre is a world-class venue and it’s a thrill and a privilege to be working with its team on this exciting project. Our overall objective is to remind everyone that the theatre and the city’s future prosperity are inextricably linked.”
