leepeckmedia has helped the ABP Southampton Marathon celebrate its 10th anniversary by delivering a PR campaign which put it centre stage across the region’s media.
With more than one million miles run by more than 75,000 entrants and £5 million raised for charity over the past decade, the annual ABP Southampton Marathon has become one of the city’s landmark events.
This year’s marathon saw over 9,000 runners head to Southampton’s streets as well as an estimated 20,000 spectators, leaving the city bursting with life. As a result, the marathon has also contributed a £1.5m boost to the local economy – £15m over the 10 years. And here at LPM we successfully secured coverage for the race across radio, TV, online and print, including a full front-page feature in the region’s top daily newspaper.
The 26.2-mile (42km) marathon route featured two loops through the heart of Southampton. This year’s event also saw the addition of Music in the Marathon – 17 local musicians performing on eight stages along the marathon route.
Dan Gaffney was the first to cross the marathon finish line, completing the course in just over two hours and 35 minutes. In the women’s race, Jenny Badger claimed victory with an impressive time of two hours and 58 minutes.
Race director Chris Rees of organisers Rees Leisure, said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure working with leepeckmedia over the last decade with both the ABP Southampton Marathon and World of Swimming. Lee and the team do a cracking job and coverage this year has been incredible as always!”
He added: “Just this year alone we are supporting more than 100 charities, and we have people from 34 different counties running. I also want to say a massive thank you to all our hard working and dedicated volunteers, none of this would be possible without them.”
